AYC Inaugural Water Under the Bridge Regatta

by Claudia Kirscher - Fleet 42

On Saturday, November 6, the first official day of the Tempe Town Lake was opened with 60-plus nonmotorized boats of every size, shape, length, and mode of power. It got pretty wild watching the 7-class starts cruising and crisscrossing across the narrow lake, through the other entrants ... to round 4 marks to the finish .... 10 catamarans (from Hobie Fleet 66 & AZ Multihull Fleet 42), 7 Thistles,, 3 Coronado 15s, Commodore Laser Guy was right in the thick of it with 16 Lasers, 9 Sunfish, 8 Portsmouth class (Capri, Challenger, Highlander, Buccaneer), 2 PHRF (Merit, Santana), AND 6 Catalina 22s, along with the various other nonregistered boats, canoes, and kayaks. Needless to say, even launching & taking out all of these boats (with only one launch ramp and no shore !) Was quite a challenge & several Fleet members parked themselves on the launch site wall & had a good laugh as trailers were being backed down to the water !

Fortunately, we had wind to start and lure us around three of the marks .... and then it began to goooooo away ! There were some pretty creative floater finishes .... we were VERY glad the cats had the first start while there was just enough wind to finish !
